Soap Star to play HMT villain Hook

By Scott Begbie, entertainments editor

Neighbours’ Dr Karl Kennedy will be paying a house visit to Aberdeen – to play Captain Hook in Peter Pan at His Majesty's.

Alan Fletcher, known the world over as Dr Kennedy in the phenomenally popular soap, will be shedding his good guy image to play one of the greatest villains of all time in this year’pantomime.

And Alan, speaking from his Melbourne home, said: “ I’m looking forward to getting to your part of the world. The furthest north I’ve been in Scotland is St Andrews, but never to Aberdeen. Everyone raves to me about the place. ”

He’s just as enthusiastic about the chance to pick up a cutlass in Peter Pan. “You should come to the theatre and experience something absolutely magic. Peter Pan gives that to people, ” said Alan.

He said Hook was one of his favourite panto roles, having previously played the pirate captain in Sheffield’s panto in 2000.

Alan is the latest big name to be announced by the Evening Express. He’ll be joining Keith Jack, of Any Dream Will Do fame, and the double act of Alan McHugh and Jordan Young that earned such acclaim in last year’s production of Aladdin.

Duncan Hendry, chief executive of Aberdeen Performing Arts, said: “We are thrilled to have secured an international actor of Alan’s stature to star in Peter Pan and we are looking forward to welcoming him to HMT. ”

Michael Harrison, managing director of Qdos Pantomimes, the firm behind Peter Pan and last year’s smash-hit Aladdin, said “Alan is a very talented actor and entertainer. He will make a superb Captain Hook. ”

Peter Pan opens at HMT on Saturday, December 6, for four weeks and tickets are flying out of the Aberdeen Box Office door. Tickets sales are twice what they were at this time last year.
